English Language Radio Coverage of Latin American News

In the New York City area, WBAI (99.5 FM) carries a ten-minute review of Latin American news Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at the end of the regular 6:30 p.m. newscasts. The news is compiled from foreign newspapers, Reuters and Agence France Presse dispatches (WBAI is the only U.S. radio station which uses the complete AFP services). On Sunday at 10:30 p.m., Tana de Gamez, who edits the Latin American news broadcasts, produces a half-hour commentary on the “Latin American World.” Born in Spain and now a U.S. resident, Tana de Gamez is a specialist in Latin American and Spanish history. Author of Like a River of Lions (Paperback Library, 1962), a political novel on Spain, and The Yoke and The Star (Belmont Books, 1967, 95c paperback), an historical novel on the Cuban Revolution, she has lived off and on in Cuba since the Machado dictatorship.

In the Los Angeles area, KPFK (90.7 FM) carries a fifteen-minute “Latin American Press Review” every other week on Friday at 6:25 p.m. (rebroadcast the next Monday at 9:00 a.m.). The news is compiled from Latin American newspapers by Don Bray, associate professor of political science at California State College at Los Angeles and a NACLA sponsor.
