Karen Wald, Children of Che: Education and Day Care in
Cuba, Ramparts Press, 1978, 399 pp. $4.95.
Karen Wald focuses on education and day care to explore the
Cuban revolution’s efforts to create a new society. Her comparisons of education, prenatal care, health care, and juvenile delinquency in Cuba today with the same areas in pre-revolutionary Cuba, and, more dramatically, with the United States, reveal how important the political and economic structures of society are in determining the mental and physical health of our children. The children speak through interviews with Wald. Their recounting of the role children play in the revolution is highly effective.
